Vege B&W
The Story Behind the Photo
Taken at the B&H Dairy Restaurant in New York City, this photograph looks down the length of the restaurant’s counter. While on temporary assignment with IBM Watson, I was encouraged by a local to visit the small kosher vegetarian restaurant. I had no idea what to expect, only that it was a place I needed to experience. The food was remarkably flavorful and varied, and the restaurant had an intimate atmosphere all its own.
Seated at the end of the counter, I noticed how the repeating lights and the lines of the counter naturally drew the eye toward the man looking directly at the camera. Although the original photograph was taken in color, converting it to black and white completely transformed its mood. The result became my favorite photograph from my time in New York, capturing the closeness of the restaurant, its patrons, and the distinctive character of the counter.
